Grape tomatoes originated in Southeast Asia during the late 20th century, developed by the Known-You Seed Company in Taiwan through traditional cross-breeding techniques. Initially grown in China, they made their way to the United States in 1996 when farmer Andrew Chu planted seeds in Florida after hearing about their rising popularity in Asia. Despite a slow start in the U.S., Chu’s shipments up the East Coast quickly caught attention, and by 2001, Grape tomatoes were outselling cherry tomatoes.
Red Grape tomatoes are part of a diverse array of Grape tomato varieties, which also come in hues of gold, green, purple, and red-brown.
